What is Laser-Assisted Hatching?
Laser-Assisted Hatching (LAH) is an advanced technique used in IVF treatments to help embryos implant more successfully. In natural conception, an embryo needs to hatch out of its outer shell (zona pellucida) before it can attach to the uterine lining. However, in some cases, this process is hindered due to a thick or hardened zona pellucida, leading to implantation failure.
With LAH, a small hole is created in the embryo’s outer shell using a precise laser beam. This weakens the zona pellucida, making it easier for the embryo to hatch and implant in the uterus. This technique is particularly beneficial for couples who have experienced multiple IVF failures or have a poor prognosis with standard fertility treatments.
